Forest Witch Commentary:
Everywhere I go, there are people saying that they are Reiki Masters. Regardless of their personal issues, mental and emotional limitations and struggles, and lack of self-awareness, the Reiki Master Mills continue to churn out an overabundance of unqualified practitioners. Here's how it works: A "Reiki Master" advertises an open-to-the-public class where anyone, regardless of intent, motivation, spiritual understanding, or psychological preparedness can pay their money and learn Reiki techniques. I've spoken to many students of these cattle call sessions, and they have relayed stories of becoming sick for days or even weeks after participating in this type of class. I've had to clear and rebalance their energies, and they made an immediate recovery. These students were not taught to ground or protect themselves, and the techniques do not teach them to allow Universal Life Force Energy to flow through them, so they end up giving away their own energy. This depletes their personal store of energy. When Reiki is performed properly, the practitioner also gets energized and rejuvenated. Grounding is an essential component of performing Reiki and for general well being (see my article on grounding and centering that includes exercises you can do right now at http://www.forestwitch.com/Articles.htm). A recent graduate of a Reiki Level I program told me that her teacher told her to "ground by eating chocolate!" While eating food of any type - preferably healthy, of course - can serve to ground you after performing a Reiki session or ritual, the grounding for a Reiki practitioner should be done prior to the session being performed. She also said that her teacher told her that the attunement is to "release all her stuck energies." As a client, would you want this person channeling all of her stuck stuff into you? These blockages should be addressed and cleared prior to learning Level I, hence the reason I require a pre-Level I assessment and clearing session. Without clearing first, once attuned, the person is now wide open and able to project their "stuff" without controlling it. One "Reiki Master" I met recently asked me what the Japanese symbols were on my Reiki brochure. He was surprised to know that it said "Rei Ki" or Universal Life Force. It made me wonder what else was missing from his training. Other students have told me that some of them have taken Level II the day after they have Level I. This gives them no time to practice or to absorb the concepts of the first level. I require 8 months to one year between levels to ensure that the student practices and experiences the first level energies before attuning them to the next level and teaching more advanced concepts. I also require at least a year at level II and an assessment of student effectiveness before teaching them at the master level. It takes practice and continuous learning to be adept at anything that is important to you. Reiki is no exception. When searching for a Reiki program, or any other type of program for that matter, find out about the teacher's philosophy, what you will learn, and what you can expect in your continuing education. The Reiki Master Mill has churned out thousands of practitioners that do not know basic concepts, have not addressed their inner issues, do not attend to their own physical health, and who are not self-aware, and therefore, are unable to channel powerful healing energy. Rather, it feels like a dripping faucet. It's up to you to decide what type of student and practitioner you want to be. Be selective in your choice of teacher and program. As teachers, prepare your students to embark on their own healing journey before attuning and training them. If you're already trained, read, practice, and seek out ways to increase your self-awareness. Simply paying money, going through a class, and receiving a piece of paper does not make a qualified Reiki practitioner, and certainly not an effective Reiki Master. |

The intense study of any topic is transformative. Whenever we embark on the study of anything - to learn a skill, a concept, or a way of being - the learning helps us to transcend our understanding from where we are to a higher level. New knowledge challenges our current way of thinking, allowing us to question what we thought we knew, or to enhance the meaning of what we already know. We can build upon foundational concepts with ever more intricate aspects of a topic, adding dimension and depth. Our brains physically transform, lighting up the neo-cortex and making new neural pathways to accommodate the information. We expand and open, seek and consider, dispute and accept, and in the end, come to a greater understanding of the topic and ourselves. Each time we open to new information or intensely study a particular topic, we become more self-aware, exploring the depths of what we believe and how we view the world. We decide which bits of information to incorporate based on how it feels to us, as we determine if it fits into our world view or completely changes our perceptions. Our studies can lead us onto new pathways to follow a stream of philosophy or skill acquisition that is uncovered during the study of the original topic. Follow it along until you come to its end and go down any tributaries you find interesting. You never know what awaits you until you check it out. There is so much to learn in so many areas. Study what there is in your particular topic of interest and then seek to contribute your unique gifts to the subject. There is a reason you are attracted to certain learning opportunities, so explore why you are interested in the subject, how it fits in with your personal identity and self-concept, and what ways it contributes to your self-awareness. Combat stagnation through reading, questioning, and contributing. Continuing education and study throughout your lifetime ensures perpetual growth and transformation.
