Amethyst The
word Amethyst comes from a Greek word meaning, "not druken." The
myth surrounding the name Amethyst comes from ancient Greece. The
story is that Bacchus was angry and decreed that the first person he met
would be eaten by his tigers. Amethyst had the misfortune of being
that first person. The Goddess Diana saw the situation and turned
her into a clear crystal. Bacchus felt badly and poured grape
juice over the crystal as an offering, hence giving it its purple color.The birthstone for February, Amethyst is a stone of peace. It works by clearing one's energy field of negativity, hence it assists in overcoming addictions. The purple color is associated with the crown chakra, and so brings with it divine healing energies, an energetic shield for protection, and the ability to open one's psychic and intuitive sense. It is also an aid to meditation. Amethyst is associated with the planets, Jupiter and Neptune, the element of Water, and the deities Bacchus, Dionysus, and Diana. This stone can be used to sharpen the conscious mind and fosters courage in those who wear it. Amethyst can be used in prosperity, emotional healing, and love spells. |

Transformation of the self has many representations throughout history and cultures. Deities, Tarot symbolism, and planetary energies in astrology all serve to guide us on our quest for transcendence from one state to another. The Hindu God, Shiva, is my favorite icon of transformation in the way it embodies the destructive forces that must precede the divine creative energy. In daily life, this concept manifests as the release of negative energy in order to make room for positive vibrations to come into your life. For some, what is removed may be a way of thinking or behaving, as with outmoded beliefs and bad habits, so that these can be replaced by beneficial thoughts and healthy behaviors. Depending on the magnitude of the shift demanded by the Universe, the complete destruction of a way of being may be necessary to create the new life that serves your true life purpose. This is the case when The Tower comes up in a Tarot spread, indicating upheaval, the demise of old ways of being, and the need to learn from the experience. For those who listen and understand the lesson, it may be followed by the Ace of Cups to uphold the cycle of nature in which decay provides nutrition for new growth. The Death card also indicates an ending and a new beginning. In astrology, the planetary influence of Pluto can promote completely destructive energies in order to create anew. The lessons are hard, yet necessary, and provide fertile ground to rise above life's challenges. The process of transformation requires work, a removal of the old, and the creation of the energies that carry you down the path of your purpose. No need to shy away from the inevitable; rather, it is fortuitous to prepare yourself for shifts and changes, knowing it will make you stronger, more confident, and aligned with your true life purpose.
